Sea Swimming with Brighton Beach’s Resident Seal
Recently our sea swimming group were joined by a very inquisitive guest - none other than the Insta-famous resident seal! The seal dived into the sea to accompany the students and teachers in what turned out to be an unforgettable session. The 16ºC water didn’t seem to faze our sea swimmers as they enjoyed this marvellous experience.
A Celebration of Design and Technology GCSE Coursework
There has been some incredibly creative work from our Design and Technology students in producing their final GCSE prototypes. This year’s design challenges ranged from ‘Improving the experience of working from home’ to ‘Caring for animals’.
Students produced a 40-page portfolio and physical prototype manufacturing by hand, CAD/CAM, and experimentation with a range of sustainable materials.
Their successful problem-solving has meant the students have developed innovative and wonderfully creative designs.
Sheep-Shearing
June saw our wonderful flock of 16 sheep shorn and you could almost tell how relieved they were to lose their fleeces in this particularly hot weather! The dogs belonging to Holly the Sheepshearer, did a great job of rounding up the flock, and Farm Prefects and staff watched as the sheep were very quickly shaved – it was incredible to see how much wool came off!
After the successful shearing, the wool has been donated to our Textiles Club where it will be spun and used to make garments.
Year 10 – Business Trip – Drusillas Zoo
Year 10 Business students visited Drusillas Zoo in June which included an educational presentation on Drusillas as a Business and Marketing entity. This was of great value to the students as it had specific links to the AQA GCSE specification. As a thriving independent business, Drusillas is a brilliant example of how a strong focus on customer experience and strong marketing can help a small business grow.
Along with some free time to explore the zoo, the students were also set a ‘Marketing Fact Finding Task’ and they even got to take part in a ‘Meet and Greet’ with some of the smaller animals. It was a wonderful trip that allowed the students to understand the zoo from a business point of view.
Brighton Town Sports
A small group of athletes headed to Withdean for the annual Brighton Town Sports meet. It was a fantastic afternoon with some of the students achieving personal bests. Minnie ran the 100m in 13.8 seconds and Eva in 13.0 seconds – two phenomenal times!
There were some amazing performances in the field and our two relay squads gave it their all, particularly the Inter relay team who ran it in 54 seconds. We were victorious and were crowned winners of the Girls’ Relay Cup. We managed a brilliant second place in the Girls’ Jump Cup and missed out on being the Junior Girls’ Overall Winners by just one point!
Well done to all the team for the huge effort they have put into Athletics this season.
Boarding Round-Up
The boarders were welcomed back to school this month by glorious sunshine after the half-term break. They used their fantastic baking skills to bake some delicious cupcakes for the charity bake sale, helping to raise money for Project Moldova, and an amazing surprise birthday cake for Mrs Diplos. It was such a lovely way for the students to thank Mrs Diplos for all she does for Lawrence House.
June also saw a fun-filled boarding social, with music, bouncy castles, ice cream, and plenty of games including a rather competitive game of tug of war! House 1 won the Junior round and the Senior round winners were Keswick House - well done to House 1, the overall winners.
