Percy – Finalist in the British Education Awards

As a result of her exceptional GCSE results, Percy was recently a finalist in the British Education Awards, which have been established to promote excellence in British education. Percy achieved a remarkable twelve GCSE Grade 9s, which is an outstanding accomplishment, winning her a place as a national finalist in a glamorous awards’ ceremony in Manchester.

Tilly at UCLA

We were delighted to hear that Tilly (Yr11) has been accepted by UCLA on their  highly esteemed and competitive pre-college Summer Art Institute in Fine Art Painting programme, which is designed for highly motivated and talented students.

The application process was in-depth, and Tilly had to submit four pieces of her recent artwork, along with a supporting statement. Decisions usually take three weeks, so it was amazing that within 24 hours of submitting her application, Tilly received the exciting news that she was successful!

This is an incredible achievement, and we wish Tilly the very best of luck. The course is held in Los Angeles – what a brilliant way to spend some of the summer holidays!

Roedean Netball Masterclass with Pamela Cookey

This month, our admissions team hosted an exciting netball experience day for prospective students. The event was run by the netballer, Pamela Cookey, who was selected to represent England in the Commonwealth Games in 2002 and won bronze medals in 2006 and 2010.

It was wonderful to see our visiting students throw themselves into the experience, it was clear to see that they really enjoyed working with Pamela which was no surprise as she was so positive and supportive. Some of our current students also got involved, and helped throughout the session, even umpiring games. It was a hugely successful day and everyone who took part did incredibly well.

World Book Day

World Book Day saw a huge array of characters wandering around the Roedean corridors, from Alice in Wonderland to Hermione Granger and even a huge pterodactyl! At lunchtime there was a showcase of costumes in the shape of a mini catwalk which was great fun, along with a pop-up book shop and delicious themed treats baked by our wonderful catering team.

The day was also a charity non-uniform day which helped raise valuable funds for the orphanage in Moldova, which Roedean has pledged to support for the next decade.

British Science Week

As part of British Science Week, there was a huge array of fun and interesting activities on offer for eager students and staff alike. Year 12 STEM Ambassadors lead break-time activities in the fireplace, and there were TED Talks and quizzes for tutor time.

Excited students in Years 7-9 set off roaming around School as part of an ‘inventor hunt’ – members of staff wore badges with the name and biography of famous scientists, and students had to try and match the names to the clues on their sheet.

An online treasure hunt for Year 10 and above, directed the students around the School in search of hidden clues about inspirational scientific figures. At the end of the week, we were delighted to welcome ORs who are studying Sciences at University or who are recent graduates, to give virtual talks and Q&A sessions. They shared their experiences of what is involved in undergraduate study and offered valuable advice to current students.

Boarding Round-Up

The creativity of our boarders never ceases to amaze us, and this last month has been no different. The Houses have been  trying out new and exciting recipes and the culinary wonders that have been produced included, homemade pavlova, cookie pizzas, beautiful garden focaccia, mocktails and much more – they also celebrated International Women’s Day with their famous bake off!

It was lovely for so many students to get involved making beautiful Mother’s Day cards which were sent all over the world, and others celebrated National Floral Design Day by making some unique flower crowns.

As always there have been a huge selection of activities on offer for our boarders – there have been sunset bike rides, badminton, board games and bingo to name a few. With Spring very much on its way and with Roedean’s fantastic location, the boarders are very much looking forward to getting out more and enjoying what Brighton has to offer.
