CAP Music
With the start of the new academic year, came the launch of this year’s Community Action Programme. Undertaken by every girl in Year 12, the programme gives the students the chance to develop their leadership and communication skills, and includes Community Music, which prepares concerts for local institutions.
This month, the CAP Musicians went to one of our new partners, the Somerset Centre, to give their first concert of the year. The event turned out to be incredibly lively, with everyone singing along, and even getting up for a dance.
The students impressively put together a programme of music in under two weeks, and the audience really did have a great time. They seemed particularly amazed with the fact that one of our students took a full drumkit!
It was a lovely afternoon, a highlight being one of the residents having a go on our keyboard to play her friend Happy Birthday. We are looking forward to visiting again soon.
Sailing
As part of our exciting Wild Fridays programme, some of our Year 7s have been learning how to sail! At the start of this month, they took part in a session on land, where they recapped on how to rig the toppers, and learnt all about the points of sailing. This included positioning the boats and tacking and adjusting the sails. It was really useful and played an important part in preparing them to head out onto the water.
The following week, our intrepid sailors battled the elements and took to the lake. The strong gusts of wind made sailing rather tricky, but the students adapted extremely well to the conditions, and persevered.
It was a thoroughly enjoyable and a great experience on the water for all.
Year 12 Art
The incredibly talented Year 12 Artists have been taking part in weekly life-drawing sessions as part of their induction phase. It has been wonderful to see some beautiful pieces that have come from experimenting with colour and mark making.
They have also been exploring the amazing world of linocuts, inspired by an abstract arrangement of paper lampshades. The lovely work they have produced will be featured in the keenly anticipated, November Print Exhibition.
Year 7 Sponsored Silence
This month, the whole of Year 7 took part in an hour-long sponsored silence, to raise funds for their dedicated charity, which this year is Rockinghorse.
Everyone participated with 100% effort, and while some students found the challenge more difficult than others, they still persevered. It was great to see the students find innovative and creative ways to communicate without sound, and the silence at lunch time was welcomed by catering staff and Miss Bamford!
Boarding Round-Up
The boarding houses have been full of laughter, creativity and food, as the students have been settling into the Autumn term.
The delicious treats the students create are second to none, and have included, bubble tea, cookies, pizza rolls, and homemade brownies, to name but a few.
Activities this month have ranged from making friendship bracelets to movie nights, swimming to shopping trips, and everything in between. It has been particularly lovely to see the students from Lawrence House tending to their garden and making a beautiful feast out of the greens they have grown – a real effort to live sustainably.
As Halloween is just around the corner, some of our boarders have had great fun, decorating the Houses with ghostly bunting and pinecone bats. Some then continued the theme, dressing as ghosts and running around Main School, stopping only to pose for creepy photos!
