House Shout
This year’s House Competitions got off to a brilliant start, with the ever-popular House Shout. It was wonderful to see everybody come together on the front quad in House colours and the students were passionate, loud, and full of energy!
The competition was strong, and the overall winners were House 4, who retained their title from last year.
In addition, there were individual category winners, and those were:
For sheer volume – House 4, for clarity – House 1, for style – House 3, and for House spirit – House 2
Well done to everyone involved!
AMSP Year 10 Maths Event
On Thursday 21st September, 30 students from local schools, joined 24 Roedean students for a Maths enrichment event run by the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme.
The morning kicked off with a fascinating talk about careers. Students looked at the mathematics of computer graphics, calculations in sports science, and probabilities in medical testing.
They then teamed up to take part in a Dragon Quiz competition, before attending a talk about space maths. The talk concluded with them making their own helicopters, which really was great fun!
Megs and Molly in the English Youth Ballet
During the Summer holidays, two students, Megs and Molly danced in the EYB production of ‘Cinderella in Hollywood’ at the Orchard Theatre in Dartford.
When asked about the amazing experience, Megs said,
‘I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to perform with so many amazing dancers. This is my second EYB production and I definitely want to dance more in the future! I loved meeting new friends and performing with all the lights and props. It’s amazing to work with the professional dancers too!’
Molly added,
‘The EYB has been a great experience as I have been working with professional dancers, as well as learning new skills and improving previous techniques. It was also great to learn fun and new ballet pieces and to perform them on stage in front of family and friends who get to witness the magnificent performance so many people have worked really hard on. I have definitely had a great experience with the EYB and have made plenty of lifelong friends and memories.’
Finalist – Independent School of the Year for Boarding
You may recall that Roedean had been shortlisted in the Independent School of the Year Awards 2023, for Independent Boarding School of the Year. We are delighted that we have now been named as a finalist and that the amazing holistic education we all enjoy, has been recognised in this way. We are looking forward to the winner being announced, early in October.
A Spectacular Start to the Swimming Season
12 of our squad swimmers headed to Pavilion in the Park in Horsham, for an exciting relay gala. The event was a qualifying meet to get to the National Finals in November, which will take place in Birmingham, where the Commonwealth Games were held in 2022!
With feelings running high, it was lovely to see our teams rally together to reduce nerves and cheer each other on. There were some exceptional performances, with the Juniors achieving second place in both their events and the Inters also achieving second place in their medley relay. Our Senior swimmers also swam strongly, and there were some promising times achieved for so early in the season.
The whole team performed incredibly, and more importantly, showed brilliant team spirit.
Carmen’s Huge Oil Painting
Year 13 Art student, Carmen, has taken up her largest painting challenge yet. Inspired by photographs she took at Borough Market in the summer, the project is a huge 2 x 1.5 m oil painting. While it is still a work in progress, you can see the incredible first layers of the painting after just a week.
The painting is only part of her development work for her Art A Level and we can’t wait to see her ideas for her final piece.
Boarding Round-Up
As we started the new academic year, it was wonderful to welcome so many new and old students to boarding across the Houses. The first night saw a rare blue supermoon, and in the evenings that followed, there were some beautiful sunsets, with many students rushing outside to get the best pictures.
On the first day of school, the boarders looked incredibly smart, and students were given various keepsakes to mark the occasion, including handmade pocket hearts, good luck cards, and inspirational quotes. At the end of the week, the boarders were treated to a visit from the ice cream van with a huge range of flavours on offer, from bubble-gum to honeycomb, and everything in between!
The weekend brought a wonderful array of activities, with baking, lavender bag making, and an indoor games night to name but a few.
We talked to Sorcha about her role as a Theatre Director and how she was one of the youngest ever directors selected for the Lir Academy's MFA in Thea… More...
