World Book Day
World Book Day took place on Thursday 2 March, and this saw an incredible array of literary-themed costumes at Roedean as part of our charity non-uniform day. All money raised will go to Rockinghorse, the local charity supporting sick children.
There were several other events and activities that took place, including a visit from former staff member, Chikodili Emelumandu, who is now an established author. She spoke to Year 10 about her journey to becoming a writer and what inspired her along the way.
Year 7 had the opportunity to hear from new writer, Ravena Guron, whose first book ‘This Book Kills’ is fast becoming a huge success. As well as talking about what inspired her to write crime fiction, Ravena talked passionately about not pursuing just one passion, instead realising that you can be successful at multiple things if you are willing to work for it.
SISNA Tournament
We welcomed 29 teams from different schools to Roedean for the annual U12 and U13 SISNA tournament on Wednesday 1 March. It was great to have so many teams attend, and both of our age groups played incredibly well, securing third place in the competition. The squads showed hard work, drive, and determination as well as great sportsmanship and kindness, not only to each other but also to other teams.
CAP Community Cooking
Our Year 12 CAP Community Cooking group enjoyed a visit to Off the Fence in March, to find out more about the charity and in particular, project Antifreeze. Through this project, the tasty treats they bake every Wednesday afternoon, including cakes and biscuits, are distributed across the city.
Project Antifreeze provides food, hot drinks, sleeping bags, and hygiene items to the homeless and our CAP students are proud to support this work. The informative visit allowed them to discover more about food distribution and gave them a greater insight into what really happens on the streets and the work being done to support the homeless. The group were all awarded a medal from the founder of Off The Fence for their support.
British Science Week 2023
We celebrated British Science Week at school during March, with the theme ‘connections’. This gave students the wonderful opportunity to get involved in a themed fireplace session, put on by the Science Faculty during break times. The chemical connection challenge proved to be a favourite, with dry ice added for extra drama!
The challenges didn’t stop there, as students tackled our activity booklet which contained, a wordsearch, chemical dingbats, a Physics crossword, Chemistry sudoku, and a Biodiversity treasure hunt around site.
Lily plays Lavender in London!
Miss Bamford and Ms.Marek ventured up to London to watch Lily (Yr 7), perform in the West End production of Matilda. The multi-award-winning spectacular is based on Roald Dahl’s adored book Matilda and tells the story of the most extraordinary young woman.
Playing Matilda’s best friend, Lavender, Lily is a main part throughout and she showed the most incredible energy. Miss Bamford and Ms. Marek were so impressed by her acting ability and we will no doubt be seeing Lily a lot more in future productions – she really is a star!
The Bath Cup at the London Aquatic Centre
The PE department headed up to the capital with 5 members of the Roedean swim team to visit the incredible London Aquatics Centre and swim alongside some of the most talented swimmers from independent schools across the UK.
The renowned centre has hosted the best in World swimming, including Kate Ledecky and Michael Phelps and visiting the amazing Olympic facilities was a fantastic opportunity for the students.
All of our swimmers did incredibly well, their effort, tenacity and determination were commendable. A big well done to Clara, who knocked 1.4 seconds off her 50m freestyle, a time that she had set just 5 days previously!
Pschology trip to see Freud's Couch
39 Psychology students travelled to Hampstead in North London, to visit the house, now a museum, where Sigmund Freud spent the final year of his life. Freud's study, complete with his original couch, has been left (somewhat eerily) exactly as it was when he died in 1939. The students spent a fascinating couple of hours looking at his collections for cultural figures, watching documentary footageof his escape from the Nazis in Vienne and learning about his daughter Anna's ground-breaking work in developmental psychology.
Brighton and Hove Youth Council
Following virtual hustings and voting, we have successfully elected four Year 12 students to represent Roedean on the Brighton and Hove Youth Council. Congratulations to Paloma, Amelia, Elodie and Maria.
Boarding Round-Up
Our Boarders have had a full-packed month with a huge range of activities taking place each week. These included a karaoke social, homemade treat baking and even a trip to the cinema.
Talented students from Lawrence took time out from their busy schedules to enjoy some chill time at the piano and some creative students from House 3 have been experimenting with making their own lip balms.
With Easter just around the corner some of the houses have started to decorate! We have been keeping an eye out for more eggs and bunnies.
