Fantastic News - we have received sufficient donations to start the conservation work on the HMS Vernon Ensign that flew on the front terrace on D-Day.
The flagpole used to be located by the steps above the flat games pitch and HMS Vernon moved it to the front Terrace, where it has remained ever since. Every morning while HMS Vernon was at the school the White Ensign was slowly hoisted while the National Anthem was played and broadcast from one of the School House towers and from each end of the Terrace, Prayers were held at that time and once a week there was a march past. Headmistress Emmeline Tanner took the salute at the march past on 6th September 1944. How fitting that it was on that same date 79 years later than we received the final donation we needed to reach our target for the conservation of this iconic ensign.
We are waiting for confirmation from the Brighton based textile conservator, Zenzie Tinker, as to when this can start. If you want to see examples of the amazing work of Zenzie and her team – do check her social media (our ensigns feature back at the beginning of February!)
