Since we launched this Appeal, the generosity of ORs and friends of Roedean has exceeded our expectations.
The iconic sundial, the focal point of the front terrace and the first gift to the school in 1899 has been restored and conserved. The original inscriptions are now clearly legible with the addition of a new one marking the restoration.
In the original Housemistresses’ Drawing Rooms, conservation of all three exquisite friezes painted by Sylvia Lawrence in the early 1900’s is nearing completion. They are such an important part of Roedean’s history.
On the 80th anniversary of D-Day in June 2024 at a Service held in the Quad, the ORA President, Noelle Chase presented the newly conserved WWII HMS Vernon ensign to Niamh Green on behalf of the ORA. It was an atmospheric moment, imagining the ships in the Channel passing the School, to commence the liberation of Europe.
Mindful of achieving the right balance between conservation and restoration and having witnessed what can be achieved, we now wish to push on and raise the funds to restore the remaining Heritage Projects – the Art Studio Tiles, four WWI Ensigns, and the Cloisters Fountain. You can read more about them, and the support needed to restore them in the Heritage Projects Brochure.
Please do help us to achieve our goals and if you would like to see these unique historical artefacts and hear more about them please join us for a tour on Saturday 15th March starting at 10.30am for 11am to which everyone, ORs, parents, former staff and their guests are welcome. You can sign up for the tour here.
