Harriet Morphew (No.4, 2012-14) is a Building Services Engineer, STEM ambassador, and Women in Building Services Engineering (WiBSE) panel member. She works to raise awareness about careers in construction and the built environment along with helping to increase and retain the number of women in the industry.

Harriet has been a regular contributor at Roedean careers events, taking the time to educate others and has offered support to a number of students over the last few years. She recently attended our Futures Fair in March as well as holding a mentoring call with current student Ellie, sharing useful resources and advice to support her career exploration.

Ellie said,

“During our discussion, Harriet recommended several useful resources to help me understand different careers in the construction industry. She suggested exploring the Go Construct website, which includes a quiz to identify potential career paths. Harriet also mentioned a TEDx talk by Alexandra Knight, the founder of STEMAZING, which focuses on STEM and engineering. I’m excited to watch this soon.

Additionally, we talked about the calculation and design tools commonly used in mechanical engineering, such as AutoCAD, Revit, and IES VE for Engineers, all of which I can access through educational licenses.

Finally, Harriet shared some great ideas for my EPQ, particularly around decarbonising Roedean, with options like photovoltaic roof tiles and calculating electricity demand based on room types. I’m looking forward to further exploring these ideas.

I’m truly grateful for this opportunity to connect with the OR, Harriet, and for the guidance she has provided. I am excited to explore these resources and opportunities further as I continue developing my understanding of the industry.”

Harriet said,

"It was a pleasure mentoring and supporting Ellie in exploring careers in the built environment. Her enthusiasm for learning about engineering, sustainability, and design was fantastic, and I’m excited to see where her interests take her. Encouraging the next generation of engineers is so important, and I’m grateful for opportunities like this to share insights and help spark curiosity about the industry.

I also had the opportunity to host a stand about building services engineering and construction, representing BSE 3D Ltd, at Roedean’s annual careers fair. It was great to speak with students about the vital role our industry plays in creating sustainable, comfortable, and efficient buildings, and to showcase the many exciting career paths available in our industry.

With the ongoing skills shortage in engineering, every opportunity to highlight the career possibilities in building services is crucial to ensuring a strong pipeline of future talent ready to take on the challenges of our industry. It was a pleasure to support Roedean’s aspiring future engineers, and I look forward to continuing to do so in the future."

Thank you Harriet for your continued support and for being such an inspiration.
