Class of 1974 Reunion
Class of 1974 take a nostalgic tour around Roedean.
From L-R: Gill McKeown, Judy Niner, Susanna Shelton, Gail Faulkner and Alex Eldridge.
On Sunday 9th April, a group of five ORs from the Class of 1974 met for a reunion in Brighton. They were fortunate to have a beautiful day for their get together - with Brighton and Roedean looking their best in the glorious sunshine. The group consisted of Gill McKeown (Williams), Judy Niner, Susanna Shelton (Whittingham), Gail Faulkner (Wilson) and Alex Eldridge (Illingworth), all of whom were in House 4.
The group first met for lunch at Busby and Wilds in Kemptown before making their way to Roedean for a tour of the school. As always, it was as interesting for them to see all the changes to their old school as it was for us to witness their excitement at seeing it again. It was also great to hear their wonderful stories of their time at Roedean.
Tales from the touching, such as their memories of doing their sewing whilst being read a story by the Housemistress in the Drawing Room whilst in the lower years, to the naughtier stories about the boys from Brighton College sneaking into the grounds were fantastic to hear. Not to mention the hilarious recounting of spending their last night 'sleeping' in the main school corridor, leaving them rather tired for final Chapel the following morning!
There was also the very interesting story about Miss Sturgiss, their English teacher, who they discovered years later had not only been taught by Tolkien at Oxford in the 1930s, but had been interviewed by a panel including him to obtain her First. She even received a wink from him in response to one of her answers!
All in all a great time was had by the Class of '74
